Gianni Infantino Recognized for Contributions to Football in Kosovo

In October 2025, FIFA president Gianni Infantino was awarded the Presidential Medal by Kosovo for his significant contributions to global football development and his support for Kosovo’s football community. This prestigious recognition took place in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, and was presented by Kosovan President Vyosa Osmani.

Kosovo, which declared its independence in 2008, has faced many challenges on the international stage. President Infantino, who became the FIFA president in February 2016, played a critical role in ensuring Kosovo’s membership in FIFA within months of his tenure, marking a significant step in FIFA history. By May 2016, Kosovo was formally welcomed into the FIFA family.

The first official international game for Kosovo was held in March 2014, and their inaugural competitive match was in September 2016 during the qualification round for the 2018 World Cup. Under Infantino's leadership, FIFA has implemented several initiatives to bolster Kosovo's football infrastructure, such as the FIFA Forward Program. This initiative helped introduce the video assistant referee system in the Football Super League of Kosovo, install artificial pitches, and upgrade the Haivala Stadium within the FFK's National Technical Center.

Furthermore, Kosovo has benefited from the FIFA Football for Schools initiative launched in September 2024 and has participated in the FIFA Talent Development scheme, focusing on increasing female participation in football. These efforts underscore Infantino's commitment to recognizing and nurturing football talent from different corners of the globe, promoting unity and pride through sports.
