Iran's Steady Rise in Football: A World Cup Snapshot

Iran's Steady Rise in World Football

Iran's football team, having qualified for their fourth consecutive World Cup and sixth in eight editions, is now a recognized force in international football. Despite their regular appearances, they have only secured three wins in 18 World Cup matches and have never progressed beyond the group stage. In the last World Cup held in Qatar, Iran faced a crucial match against the USA where a draw would have been sufficient to advance; however, they were defeated 1-0.

After three consecutive World Cup campaigns under the guidance of Carlos Quiros, Iran appointed Amir Galanoi for a second tenure as head coach. Under Galanoi, Iran enjoyed a seamless qualification phase, securing six wins in their first seven matches. Iran's attacking prowess was led by Mehdi Taremi, who scored five goals, and Sada Asmoun, who added four to the tally. Taremi, currently playing for Olympiacos, is among the few Iranian players in European clubs, with most of the squad based in the Persian Gulf Pro League.

Alireza Behrenwad continues as Iran's first-choice goalkeeper, notable for saving a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Meanwhile, Theron Band has earned recognition worldwide, holding two Guinness World Records for the longest throw and drop kick of a football.

The team predominantly uses a flat back four, which contributed to recording five clean sheets in ten qualifying matches. The midfield stability is provided by Saeed Ezattalahi and Samanan Goddos, with the latter gaining fame with Brentford, helping them reach the English Premier League for the first time in 2021. The forward line is strengthened by Mehdi Taremi, known for his impressive scoring rate both internationally and at the club level with teams like Porto and Inter. Supporting Taremi are players like Amun and Alireza Jehanbach, the latter a former regular in the Eredivisie, with added flair from Mehdi Geddi, nicknamed the "Neymar of Asia."

Currently positioned within the top 25 of FIFA's rankings and bolstered by a solid qualification performance, Iran is once again hopeful of making a significant impact at the upcoming World Cup.
