Just Fontaine's Unbreakable Record: 13 Goals in One World Cup

Just Fontaine's Unbreakable Record: 13 Goals in One World Cup

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Contenders

Historic Feats and Unbreakable Records in World Cup Football

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Miroslav Klose set a new record by becoming the top goalscorer in World Cup history, achieving his 16th goal during Germany’s 7-1 victory in the semi-finals. Subsequently, at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the oldest player to score a World Cup hat trick, a record previously held by Rob Rensenbrink. More recently, Lionel Messi surpassed Lothar Matthäus by making his 26th appearance in the World Cup finals during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

However, one of the most remarkable records still stands from the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, where Just Fontaine of France scored an unprecedented 13 goals in a single tournament. This achievement remains the highest number of goals scored by an individual in any World Cup. Following Fontaine, only West Germany's Gerd Müller has come close by reaching double digits with 10 goals in 1970.

Despite beginning the 1958 World Cup with only four appearances for France, and earning just nine caps afterward due to an early injury, Fontaine's rapid succession of goals laid a foundation for an illustrious albeit brief international career. He scored a hat trick against Paraguay and continued his striking spree through the tournament ending with four goals against West Germany in the third-place playoff. Notably, individual accolades like the Golden Boot were not awarded at that time, but Fontaine did receive honorary recognition in 2014 with a platinum boot for his 1958 performance.

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in North America, there is speculation about whether Fontaine's record could finally be surpassed. The expansion of the tournament to 48 teams and the increase in matches provide more opportunities for potential record-breaking endeavors. Noteworthy candidates such as Ronaldo and Harry Kane might be among those vying for this record, cementing this conversation within the hearts and minds of football enthusiasts.

While Just Fontaine himself has doubted the possibility of his record being broken, suggesting that "13 goals is an enormous total," the evolving structure of the World Cup might just provide the right circumstances for new legends to arise.
