USA Beats Mexico 3-0 as Soccer Rivalry Heats Up in Friendly

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From LatiNation Sports

USA Defeats Mexico 3-0 in a Crucial International Window

No game between Mexico and the United States is merely an exhibition. Their rivalry gives every matchup significance, even when the result does not count toward an official competition.

International windows are especially important because clubs must release players to join their national teams. Some matches are part of the Nations League or World Cup qualifying, while other teams use the window to bring players together and train. National teams only have four or five opportunities each year to gather, making these windows valuable preparation time.

The United States opened the new World Cup cycle with four wins in four games. Pochettino has the team playing at a high level, with victories over top rivals Mexico and Canada.

Mexico’s 3-0 loss to the United States was particularly painful, with the keeper conceding two avoidable goals against one of the hungriest teams. One encouraging sign for both countries was the emergence of a new generation, including many teenagers on each national team.

Rafael Marquez will now face pressure from the Mexican press after failing to win any of the four matches. Mexico’s next games are official Nations League contests against Jamaica in November. Those matches offer qualification to the Gold Cup, while the previous games served as preparation.

Players are paid for every game, including these preparation matches.
