If there’s anything college basketball coaches love, it’s experienced players in their backcourt. Due to NIL and new transfer rules across the sport, the most optimal way to get that backcourt experience has often been through the transfer portal. This offseason was no different, with tons of talent and older players available. We rank the top five guards from this year’s transfer portal and what they’ll bring to their new programs next season.

1. Ryan Nembhard – Creighton to Gonzaga
Nembhard has decided to follow in the footsteps of his brother Andrew as he’ll play for Gonzaga in 2023-24. Nembhard’s outstanding performance in the NCAA Tournament, where he scored 30 points against Baylor in the Round of 32, garnered significant interest from high-major programs and proved his status among the top guards in the nation.
2. LJ Cryer – Baylor to Houston
Cryer, who was part of Baylor’s impressive guard lineup, is off to Houston for his final collegiate season. With his solid ball-handling skills and a remarkable 40 percent three-point shooting average, Cryer brings a valuable asset to the program. He was also one of the Big 12’s most efficient scorers during the 2022-23 season.
3. Max Abmas – Oral Roberts to Texas
Abmas, one of the nation’s best shooters, gained recognition as a mid-major star during Oral Roberts’s Sweet 16 run in 2019. He is set to join Rodney Terry at Texas, where his immediate offensive contributions will be highly valued as the offense’s focal point.
4. Kerr Kriisa – Arizona to West Virginia
Kriisa was pivotal in leading Arizona’s fast-paced and efficient offense under Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd. He’s now off to West Virginia, where he’ll be a part of building the program back up following the ugly resignation of long-time head coach Bob Huggins. With his experience and leadership, Kriisa aims to contribute to bringing NCAA Tournament success back to Morgantown, something it has lacked for some time.
5. Tramon Mark – Houston to Arkansas
Tramon Mark, a key member of Houston’s talented backcourt alongside Marcus Sasser and Jamal Shead, is off to Arkansas. Known for his exceptional on-ball defending skills and offensive explosiveness, Mark will ensure that Arkansas maintains its reputation for elite guard play.
