DeChambeau’s Stunning U.S. Open Win Sparks Debate After McIlroy’s Abrupt Exit

In the aftermath of a heart-wrenching finale at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, a crestfallen Rory McIlroy was seen leaving the U.S. Open without offering congratulations to his rival, Bryson DeChambeau. The American’s spectacular performance thwarted McIlroy’s quest for a fifth major title.

McIlroy, who had initially showcased a commanding presence, faltered dramatically in the final stages, succumbing to bogeys on three of his last four holes. The Northern Irishman, 35, was in the scoring room as DeChambeau executed a jaw-dropping 55-yard pitch from the sand to within four feet, securing a one-shot victory with a deft putt on the 18th.

With his hands on his hips, McIlroy was photographed before he swiftly exited the scene, avoiding the media and bypassing the trophy presentation. This marked another missed opportunity for McIlroy, whose last major triumph dates back to the 2014 PGA Championship. His round had begun with promise, notching four birdies in a five-hole stretch to seize a two-shot lead by the 14th tee. The fervent chants of “Ror-EE! Ror-EE!" echoed through the crowd but dissipated on the 16th hole where he recorded his first three-putt of the week.

On the final hole, McIlroy’s tee shot found an infamous wiregrass bush. His recovery effort fell short of the green, and though he pitched expertly to four feet, another missed putt ensued. In contrast, DeChambeau’s remarkable execution under pressure sealed his triumph.

Reflecting on his decisive shot, DeChambeau, 30, remarked during the trophy presentation, “I still can’t believe that up-and-down. Probably the best shot of my life.” His words underscored the magnitude of his accomplishment on such a grand stage.

McIlroy is slated to return to action at the Travelers Championship, part of the PGA Tour’s Signature Events, running from Thursday to Sunday. The golfing world now turns its attention to the final major of the year, The Open at Royal Troon from July 18-21, where DeChambeau is expected to be among the leading contenders once more.
