A Memorable Masters Practice Round With Aaron Rye and Rory
A visit to Augusta National produced an unforgettable practice-round experience. After arriving at the first tee without a playing partner, he saw Aaron Rye and asked to join him. Aaron agreed, and the two began their round together.
On the second hole, Rory was playing alone behind them. They waved him up to hit into the green, and he asked if he could join their group. The three then played the final seven and a half holes together.
The crowd was thrilled to see Rory. On the fifth hole, the speaker hit a strong drive over the corner of the bunker, which he estimated required a carry of about 315 yards. Rory followed with a high, hard draw that finished roughly 20 yards ahead.
Although the ball may have received a favorable bounce, the distance still made an impression. Rory was left with a short wedge into the 500-yard hole. Watching how he approached Augusta National was a memorable experience, especially because he was playing so well. His eventual victory did not come as much of a surprise.
The service at Augusta National also stood out. Staff members greeted players personally whenever they entered a room, creating an unusual but enjoyable experience.
He also believes Augusta National suits his game. It is a big golf course, and the ability to hit high shots with spin can provide a major advantage when approaching the par-5 greens, particularly the 13th and 15th holes. He recalled hitting a good tee shot on the second hole that carried the left corner of the bunker, rolled down the hill, and left him with an 8-iron.
