Volkanovski Backed to Overcome Undefeated Movsar in a Five-Round Fight
Volkanovski has built one of the best careers in UFC history, establishing himself as a durable champion with multiple title defenses. Another victory would add to that legacy and allow him to retain the championship, but he faces an undefeated opponent in Movsar. Despite Volkanovski’s pedigree, both fighters are priced at -110.
There appears to be value in backing Volkanovski. Movsar is a strong fighter with better stand-up than might be expected from someone known primarily for wrestling, but Volkanovski’s well-rounded skill set makes this a difficult matchup for him.
Volkanovski has already demonstrated his ability to compete with a powerful grappler in Islam. He held his own on the mat in their first fight, while the rematch ended with Islam landing a head kick after Volkanovski accepted the bout on short notice. When fully healthy and prepared, Volkanovski has not been easily threatened by grappling and should have an advantage in the striking exchanges.
Volkanovski’s takedown defense, ground transitions, sweeps and submission defense further strengthen his position. He has escaped deep chokes against high-level jiu-jitsu opponents and consistently shown that he can handle difficult situations on the ground. He is viewed as a strong straight bet and a potential parlay piece at the available odds.
The oddsmakers expect a long fight, with the over 4.5 rounds priced at -280. Volkanovski can find a finish when the opportunity is available, but he is also a smart fighter who does what is necessary to win. Even if he controls the matchup, the fight could still go all five rounds because of Movsar’s durability.
Movsar enters with a 20-0 overall record and a 10-0 UFC record, but all 10 of his UFC fights have gone to a decision. He has shown durability and an ability to win close fights, although he has also dropped rounds and been caught cleanly during that run. His tendency to rely on decisions may narrow his path to victory against an opponent as complete as Volkanovski.
Movsar previously recorded early knockouts and head-kick finishes in M1 Global, but he has not finished an opponent in the UFC. While the fight is expected to last, the matchup could still become one-sided in Volkanovski’s favor.
