Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions
Rays and Brewers Could Be Headed for a Seven-Game World Series
The World Series begins Friday, with the Rays’ Game 1 starter yet to be announced. Ms was named the Brewers’ opening-game starter, a decision that came as no surprise.
Beyond the scramble for tickets, the series will come down to which team pitches, hits and plays defense better. The teams appear evenly matched, making a seven-game series seem more likely than a sweep.
The key question is whether Tampa Bay can win a game in Milwaukee while also protecting its home field. One possible path would see Milwaukee take a 2-0 lead before the Rays win all three games at home to extend the series.
Although the matchup may not attract some fans because it lacks big-market teams and numerous major stars, it should produce competitive games. Milwaukee has scored more runs over the past couple of weeks of the postseason, while the Rays’ offense showed life in the final game when Camanero hit a home run.
Game 1 could be low-scoring, especially if Milwaukee’s hitters show some rust following the layoff.
Another storyline involves longtime Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff, who is trying to earn a place on the World Series roster. After nearly 10 years with the team, Woodruff has been practicing, throwing 92 and says he is ready to pitch.
The Brewers now face a difficult decision. Woodruff has been one of their best starting pitchers and has represented the franchise for years, but he is no longer the pitcher he once was. His situation is similar to Kershaw’s with LA last year.
Woodruff pitched well when he initially returned this season, but he was hit hard in a couple of starts before returning to the IL. Despite the mileage on his arm, the Brewers could add him to the roster and potentially use him for an inning or two.
