Rays Hold Pitching Advantage as Guardians Fight to Force Game 7
The Tampa Bay Rays have an opportunity to close out the series in tonight’s elimination game, with Freddie Peralta taking the mound. Peralta was excellent in Game 2 and now has a chance to send his latest team forward for an opportunity to face his former team, the Milwaukee Brewers, for a world championship.
The Guardians appeared to be running out of steam last night. They have ground out a lot of wins over the past two months, but they now face a bullpen game on elimination day. Gavin Williams is not ready to contribute on short rest, leaving Cleveland to consider options such as Tanner Bybee, who has faced only three batters this postseason and has not pitched in 11 days.
Despite those concerns, Cleveland has repeatedly fought back when it appeared to be finished. The Guardians have kept the series close, and no team has truly taken control offensively. Their victories generally require low-scoring performances, so another tight game in the range of 3-2 or 4-2 is expected.
Tampa holds the clear pitching advantage because it does not need to use an opener. The Rays are also returning home, where they are listed around -155. However, Cleveland has shown enough resilience to make a Game 6 victory possible. The prediction is for the Guardians to win tonight and force Game 7.
If Cleveland gets to Game 7, Williams could potentially provide a few innings, leaving the series open to either team. The Guardians still need to solve Peralta after struggling against him in Game 2, while also finding enough pitchers to cover the remaining innings.
Another question is whether Tampa will enjoy a meaningful home-field advantage. It remains to be seen whether the stadium will be filled for an elimination game as the Rays attempt to secure a trip to the World Series.
