Why the Tampa Bay Rays Remain World Series Contenders

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Rays’ Development Pipeline Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive

Milwaukee appears well positioned to compete for another world championship next year, regardless of the new CBA. Tampa Bay’s outlook may seem less certain with new ownership and a stadium being built, but the Rays remain in good shape.

They may not be as successful next year as they were this season, but the organization has consistently drafted and developed talent. Shane McClanahan, arguably the best pitcher on the roster, did not throw a pitch in the postseason. If he returns healthy, he could move to the top of the rotation and potentially be even better than Rasmussen.

Losing Martinez would be offset by McClanahan’s return. The Rays also need to address the back end of the bullpen, an area they have generally handled well despite this season’s struggles outside of Baker.

Cabanero, Jonathan Aranda and Chandler Simpson are among the returning players. After playing very well at home and winning more than 90 games this season, the Rays could still finish with a win total in the 80s or close to 90 next year.

They should remain a factor in the postseason. Reaching the World Series is much harder, but outside of Martinez, there does not appear to be another potential loss who would be integral to their outlook.
