Sixers Spoil Knicks’ Ring Night With Road Win at MSG
The New York Knicks raised their first championship banner in 53 years and received their rings before facing the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. They also raised an NBA Cup banner after initially choosing not to put one up. The view was that winning the championship made it more acceptable to display the midseason tournament banner alongside it.
The new-look Sixers spoiled the celebration by earning a close win at MSG. The Knicks appeared sluggish at times, which was attributed partly to the ceremonies and emotions surrounding ring night. Philadelphia also entered with added motivation after the Knicks swept the Sixers in last year’s semifinals.
New York led for much of the first half but scored only 18 points in the third quarter, allowing Philadelphia to take control. The Sixers then executed in crunch time like a veteran team with high-level players.
Both teams played well for an opening game, although the Knicks looked out of rhythm at times. Their success often depends on Jalen Brunson finding his rhythm, and Philadelphia defended him effectively. Brunson finished 6-of-19 from the field.
Despite the loss, the Knicks showed the same synergy and continuity they displayed during last season’s run. Their players appeared to understand where their teammates would be on the floor, which could benefit them throughout the regular season if they remain healthy.
Philadelphia looked balanced, active and connected on both ends of the court. Joel Embiid struggled, but the rest of the team communicated well and appeared to play together on a string.
One major offseason question for New York was how it would replace Mitchell Robinson. Although Robinson struggled as a scorer, he was crucial on the boards and defensively. Andre Drummond provided a strong response in this game, finishing with 12 points, 14 rebounds and four assists off the bench. He entered early after Karl-Anthony Towns encountered foul trouble.
Annanobi scored 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting, while Towns recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds. Towns also faced offseason discussion about his weight and the contract extension he did not receive. Before the game, he said he would be willing to accept a discount, prompting the argument that the team should complete the deal.
Philadelphia’s key question moving forward is how Embiid will be used offensively. Playing him on the low block could take advantage of difficult matchups, but keeping the lane open for LeBron James would require Embiid to spend more time on the perimeter. That approach would depend on him improving his three-point shooting. Otherwise, the structure of the offense could become a problem later in the season and prevent Philadelphia from taking full advantage of its roster.
