Celtics Blow 22-Point Lead as Paul George Scores 38

Celtics Blow 22-Point Lead as Paul George Scores 38

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Sporting Tribune Today

Paul George Shines, but Celtics Squander 22-Point Lead Against Pistons

Paul George set a Celtics debut record with 38 points, but Boston still blew a 22-point lead against the Pistons in the first game of the season.

George was phenomenal, but the performance raised questions about whether he can sustain that level of play throughout the season. Despite his scoring, the Celtics were unable to close the game, highlighting what the team may be missing without Jalen Brown.

In previous fourth quarters, Brown could take over when needed. Without him, Boston must determine how its offense will work late in games and whether Jayson Tatum can embrace the leading role.

Tatum nearly recorded a triple-double and finished with 11 assists, but he scored 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting. While his playmaking helped keep Boston competitive, his poor shooting made it a disappointing first showing as the team’s primary option.

Tatum will now need to take between 25 and 30 shots per game. His assists must also remain part of his production because of the defensive attention he commands. He is expected to shoot better, but Boston needs both his scoring and playmaking to be successful.

George outplayed Tatum in the opener after previously saying that Tatum was the main player and that he intended to play off him. Instead, the roles appeared reversed, with Boston repeatedly turning to George while he was scoring effectively.

The Celtics’ reliance on three-point shooting was another major concern. The three can build a lead quickly, but it can also allow opponents back into the game. If those shots are not falling, Boston needs another gear, whether through midrange attempts, post play or offensive sets designed to create shots other than threes.

Boston led Detroit by 22 points in the third quarter before its players disappeared down the stretch. Duncan Robinson contributed 21 points while shooting 5-of-9 from three, and the Celtics were left with questions about their late-game offense after a frustrating loss.
