Miami Heat's 0-4 Start Raises Playoff Concerns in 2026-27

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Miami Heat’s Winless Start Creates a Betting Dilemma

NBA teams that begin a season 0-5 have historically struggled to reach the postseason. The last team cited as making the playoffs after that start was the 2016 LA Lakers, and it was noted that such a turnaround has rarely happened.

That history puts added pressure on the Miami Heat, who enter tonight’s road game against Atlanta at 0-4. Another loss would deepen concerns that the team’s early problems may not correct themselves as the season progresses.

Miami’s poor start has also created a difficult betting decision. Until the Heat win a game, backing them remains hard to justify, even when the available point spread appears favorable. Atlanta being favored by approximately 5.5 points suggests the oddsmakers also view the Hawks as the better team tonight.

A similar situation unfolded against Dallas. Rather than taking the Mavericks as 8.5-point underdogs before the game, the strategy was to wait until they took the lead and then back them at minus 2.5. That created a much better line, but the wager still lost after Miami regained control.

The Heat went 9 of 25 from the field in the fourth quarter and shot 11 of 25 from the free-throw line. Those results were viewed as variance rather than proof that the betting strategy was wrong. The improved live line offered better value, but Miami’s performance still produced the losing outcome.

On paper, Miami was considered more talented than Dallas, but poor shooting became the deciding issue. The larger concern is whether bettors should continue seeking value on a team that has yet to win. As the discussion concluded, it may be best not to try to catch a falling knife.
