Heat and Lakers Predictions, Plus Early Reactions to Wemby
The NBA conversation opened with a list featuring Luca at number one, followed by Wambiyama, Jokic and Jason Tatum. The absence of Giannis stood out and led to a discussion about the Heat being overlooked.
With Giannis and Bama Badeo, the Heat have two athletic power forwards. Giannis can dribble up and down the court, play as a point forward and jump out of the gym. Despite acknowledging some hometown bias, the prediction was that the Heat will win the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks are also back in the conversation, although they lost to the 76ers. With LeBron and Maxi, the 76ers looked strong and could be considered a favorite in the Eastern Conference.
As for the Lakers, they could gradually develop a more cohesive style and finally play outside LeBron’s shadow. Luca arrived as part of an experiment to work alongside LeBron before taking over as the Lakers’ leader and point guard.
However, the Lakers may struggle because they lack size and depth at center. That could hurt them against teams with more power, physicality and size. They may need experienced big players who know how to play with Luca.
Another prediction was that the Lakers will be worse without LeBron. Luca Donches may be the NBA’s best one-on-one offensive player, but the team needs more than individual scoring. Austin Reeves is technically and mechanically skilled, but the Lakers appear to lack athleticism.
Luca can score and produce impressive offensive statistics, but his defense remains a concern. The Lakers could struggle to defend, rebound and stop faster teams, even if they make creative passes and hit three-pointers.
Wemy also looked different in his first game compared with last year. Teams appear to be preparing for him and getting on his nerves. He received a technical foul following a scuffle after a hard foul involving Chet Holgram.
Wemy was also blocked on an easy layup by a first-year player who elevated high enough to stop him at the rim.
