Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid. Great to have Gilbert McGregor in the house. You can follow him certainly on social media and all of his coverage for the Phoenix Suns. He covers now on a daily basis, but also, of course, talks NBA with us. So we're not gonna inundate you with 15 minutes of Suns talk here on the show. That's not what we're gonna do. Gilbert, a big student of the NBA, so we wish him well and happy holidays, Gilbert, to you. Thanks for coming on. Absolutely. Happy holidays. Glad to be here. All right, so let's get started last night. I always, uh, I don't know, for me, it's. Looking at Jokic's triple-double odds and wondering if the next day here on the show, I'm gonna say he hit. I mean, look, they go up and down, you know, usually they're -120, -110, sometimes -140. Last night, another one. although he didn't have his best triple-double ever, I guess you could say that. The Nuggets win over the Jazz 135 to 112, a rare game, Gilbert, where it was sort of over before it started in the first quarter. Jamal Murray also had 27 points as well. I mean, what can you say about Denver, Gilbert? They're gonna be there in the end, you know, a lot of folks thought that when they fired Mike Malone, it was a mistake. It looks like that they made the right move because they've played very well since then. Yeah, when you talk about Jokic's triple-doubles, to see that with the not plus odds, the majority of the time it's pretty wild to think that just speaks to his excellence and what we see from him on a nightly basis. Uh, but yeah, you know, this Nuggets team, I, I think if there are any teams that could contend with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are obviously at the top of the charts in the Western Conference, I think it's them, and it's because of Nikole Jokic, we saw them push them to 7 games last season, and he is the ultimate guy who can kind of dictate the entire pace of a game as we see a ho-hum, 14 points, 13 rebound, 13 assists, a triple-double, which, you know, in a game where they just made light work of the Utah Jazz. So, what we're seeing from him, we probably will never see again, or if not, it will be generations from now. I think if there's one other team that obviously is out there, that's a clear favorite over Denver, it would be Oklahoma City. They never lose, and that, again, didn't happen last night. Although the Grizzlies did look like they had a shot in this one for a while, OKC wins 119 to 103. SGA, the favorite to win the NBA's MVP another 31 points, 11 of 12 from the field, almost hit a triple-double as well. Uh, is there anything left to say about Oklahoma City at this point? I guess since we talked the last time, Gilbert, maybe they had 2 losses, now they have 3. Yeah, yeah, you know, this, it's been fascinating. I mean, even last night, they weren't at full strength to be without Isaiah Hardenstein and then still end up with a double-digit win against a short-handed Grizzlies team as well, and the Grizzlies are almost always short-handed now, but it's always something new with the Thunder. Last night, it was 100 consecutive games with 20+ points for Shay Gilda Alexander, putting himself in company with Wilt Chamberlain, which is insane for this late lottery pick from 78 years. Ago, who was kinda made the trade work between the Thunder and Clippers, and now he is on an all-time great trajectory, and he's even better than he was last year during his MVP season. And that deep, that depth that the Oklahoma City Thunder team has is what makes them so dangerous because when somebody else is out, they can start somebody like Brandon Carlson, who might not be a household name, but he gets the job done and they always have the next man up, which makes him really dangerous during the regular season, but also in the playoffs. The Pacers led the Celtics last night by 20, but they still have at least one superstar going, and that is Jalen Brown. And as long as he is playing, Boston is gonna be in contention. They win last night 103 to 95. And at this point, they have the fourth shortest odds, Gilbert, that's a big surprise to win the East ahead of the Magic only behind Cleveland, Detroit, and New York. And so, as we get closer to Christmas Day and beyond for the second half. Half of the NBA season, the questions are going to begin, if Boston is in this dance, and they're the 5 seed or the 4th seed or the 6th seed in the East, with Jayson Tatum potentially come back in a semi-final series or maybe even the finals because, yeah, I mean, the Knicks are playing great basketball, Detroit's been a surprise, but I, I don't see a team in the East that's a definitive favorite over Boston. They're all about even to me. Yeah, I agree. And when you talk about the Knicks and Detroit, they're just as hot as the Celtics are. The Celtics have been just as hot as them. They've won 8 of their last 10 games, and they're kind of flying under the radar. Joe Mazzoula's done a great job with this team, implementing different players. Obviously, Jalen Brown playing at an all NBA level, Hugo Gonzalez, their first-round pick this past year. It's been a revelation for them and is learning. Jordan Walsh, another guy who stepped up for them. And when we talk about Jayson Tatum injury, I mean, you know, we're coming up on, you know, I think it's been about 78 months since he went down in the playoffs, and And when you get into February, March, if this team is still in the top 3 and top 4, and it's safe for him to come back because I don't want him to rush back from an Achilles injury, but, you know, we've seen a lot of stuff in modern medicine these days. I wouldn't see, uh, I don't see, uh, you know, a problem with him coming back if it's safe for him to do so, and I could see him doing so. So, if that happens, I, I can see the Celtics team contending, especially if they can ease him back in. Um, it'll be a very interesting series of situation, uh, with the Boston Celtics because they've been playing really good basketball, 3rd in the Eastern Conference right now. Oklahoma City, meanwhile, on the road tonight at San Antonio, you would expect a little bit of a challenge, I would think, but then again, I gotta check back in the fourth quarter to see them up 15, which is pretty much every game. Total 234.5 tonight. They'll tip off at 8:30 Eastern. Can the Spurs Deliver the 4th loss of the season to the Thunder, because as I look at the Thunder schedule after this, I mean, this is a tough stretch for them. If they get through this, I don't know, they may end up having You know, that 70 win number that they're looking for here. I, I just don't see anybody formidable taking them out. Yeah, you know, we just saw the Spurs do it a little over a week ago, and I think that's why the Thunder get it done tonight because it's really hard to beat the Thunder more than one time. I think back to the Warriors when they won 73 games, they only, they never lost to the same opponent two times. So for the fact that this Spurs team beat the Thunder last week, I think the Thunder took that personally. The Spurs had a Good game against them. They, they made a lot of shots. They played great defense on the Thunder perimeter guys, but I do think that the Thunder will be motivated after losing to this team last time. Victor Wimiyama, questionable. I expect him to play. He and Chet Holmgren have their, uh, healthy feud between those two guys, so it should be a great matchup. But also, these are two teams who are also gearing up for another big game, uh, on, on Thursday, Christmas Day. Seems like the Mavericks are playing at least a little bit better, you know, go win, loss, win, loss, more or less after that tough start, and then the firing of the GM. The Nuggets are 7.5 point favorites tonight on the road. Total is 237.5. Do you think that Denver wins this one easily, Gilbert, or does Dallas stay in this game? Yeah, the Mavericks have been playing good or better basketball, to your point, Craig, but I, I like the Nuggets in this 1, 2nd end of a back to back for both of these teams. The Mavs were a little bit more of a competitive game last night in New Orleans. Denver obviously traveling to get to Dallas as well, but we talked about it already. Denver made light work of the Jazz, so those guys got to rest. They should be well rested. And they are also another team who had their sights set on Christmas. So I think the Nuggets are gonna try to get their business handled early, and then they can cruise into their game on uh Thursday against the Timberwolves. It's gonna be fun is throughout the NBA season, at some point, we're gonna get Gilbert to pick against the Suns. I don't know when it's gonna be. I don't know if it's tonight. I probably not most of the season. I get it, Gilbert, you're covering them, it's tough, but at some point, we'll make you do it. Uh, tonight though, they are 5.5 point favorites against the Lakers with a total of 225.5. I'm gonna guess by looking at this, not knowing like you do about the NBA that some player is missing for the Lakers tonight for the Suns to be 5.5 point favorites. It's the only thing I can think of. Yeah, no Luka Dacic, no Rui Hachimura, no Gabe Vincent, and Austin Reeves is questionable for the Lakers tonight. So that being said, gonna be a lot uh weighing on 40-year-old LeBron James, who will be 41 in just a matter of days. And this is a matchup that's pretty beneficial for the Suns. They like to play fast and the Lakers don't necessarily like to play fast. These two teams met last Sunday, and the Lakers actually Got the best of the Suns, so I think that they will take that personally as well. Um, the Lakers beat the Suns earlier this month. Devin Booker is back kind of out of the slump that he was in. He had been playing, struggling, I think, through a groin injury. Now he's back from that as well. And I think the Suns are, are a pretty good matchup for the Lakers, especially a short-handed Lakers team on the road. I think they're trying to get healthy because they play on. On Christmas Day against the Houston Rockets. So I don't think that they're really prioritizing this game tonight in Phoenix given the health issues they've run into, and they're just prioritizing a bigger game on Thursday or a bigger game in their eyes on Thursday against the Houston Rockets. So I like the Suns in this one. This is the Suns team that plays hard. They typically take care of business, especially when they're favored. And if you're looking at the player side of things, a big night from Devin Booker could be in store. Yeah, Gilbert, do you feel like, I, and look, and I, I mean, again, with the NBA I've been covering the NBA for many, many years with the Miami Heat and all the games that they played, of course, on Christmas with LeBron and even Shaquille O'Neal. I do feel like the NFL is sort of taken over a little bit, uh, with the NBA. I'm gonna be live here on Sports Grid covering it. Uh, I'm hopeful for some good matchups here from the league because it seems like folks may be moving away from this and headed over to the NFL. Yeah, it's gonna be interesting this year. The NFL games obviously being on Netflix makes it not as easy for other people. I think the NBA lucked out because a lot of these NFL matchups aren't as consequential as they were last year. So it'll be interesting to see how it plays out, but the NFL is always, is always king. Yeah. Denver, Kansas City, Christmas night. Check out the NBA. Gilbert, have a good weekend.
