OKC Injuries Crush Potential NBA Championship Hopes

OKC Injuries Crush Potential NBA Championship Hopes

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Sporting Tribune Today

Injuries Cast Doubt on OKC’s Title Hopes

OKC’s outlook has changed dramatically following serious injuries to J Dub and Cason Wallace. J Dub suffered a fractured left fibula and dislocated ankle in a gruesome injury after looking healthy and helping OKC resemble the formidable team it had been before the Spurs series. Wallace, a newly extended role player and one of the team’s expected top perimeter defenders, could also miss the rest of the season.

John believes the injuries have ended OKC’s title hopes. He argued that the team needed a healthy J Dub during last year’s postseason and that his absence became even more significant after seeing what the Spurs accomplished in the championship. In his view, OKC could have won that series, reached the Finals and challenged the Knicks more effectively.

The plan was for J Dub, Wallace, Daimara and the rest of the roster to help OKC compete against Victor Wimpanyama and other championship-contending teams. While the team can still have a strong regular season, John said J Dub needed to be at his best for OKC to contend for a title. As great as Shai is, he does not provide everything J Dub does, and John does not believe anyone currently on the roster can fill that void.

A major trade may not offer a simple solution. OKC has plenty of draft picks and other assets, but it also has significant salary commitments after signing J Dub, Wallace, SGA and Chet to major contracts. As a second-apron team, taking on another large contract would be difficult.

Josh still expects OKC to finish as a top-four team in the Western Conference during the regular season, but he questioned whether the team can sustain its success throughout the playoffs. Reports have suggested that J Dub might return in April or for the postseason and that Wallace could also return, but putting either player directly into playoff action after these injuries would be risky.

Health remains a major question across the league. Ant is out for an uncertain amount of time, disrupting the idea that Minnesota could capitalize on OKC’s injuries. There are also concerns about Luca after a lingering injury last year. In the East, another major question is when Joel Embiid might get hurt and how the Sixers would respond.

With so many players already injured, Josh suggested that the 65-game requirement could produce an unusual All-NBA selection, even joking that someone such as Kyle Kuzma could make the third team.
