Remembering Ted Turner: Maverick of Media and Cable TV

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Remembering Ted Turner: A Media Pioneer and Wrestling Enthusiast

Ted Turner, known for his pioneering influence on modern television and media, has left an indelible mark on the industry. A maverick by nature, Turner was the owner of the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Braves and was instrumental in the founding of iconic channels such as CNN and The Cartoon Network. His contributions go beyond just being a media proprietor; he was also at the forefront of creating TBS, the first superstation, followed by WGN in Chicago, setting the stage for what we know today as cable television.

Turner's legacy extends into the world of sports entertainment as well. While he owned World Championship Wrestling (WCW), his passion for the sport was palpable. I had a personal interaction with him during my time in the industry, where his enthusiasm for wrestling was evident. Hired by Cowboy Bob Orton, I vividly recall Ted Turner's welcoming presence at the Peachtree offices of Turner, always ready to engage with anyone who walked through the doors.

Turner's approach to television was revolutionary, emphasizing continuous news coverage and laying the groundwork for networks like Fox News alongside his own CNN. His vision led to a new era of how global events, such as wars, were covered, offering 24/7 news coverage which has become a standard today. Beyond his professional acumen, Turner was known for his accessibility and desire to connect with people, always making himself available for interviews or a simple handshake.

Inspired by figures like William Randolph Hearst, Turner crafted an empire that reshaped the media landscape forever. His influence touched many, including notable figures in wrestling like Rick Fair, and he is remembered as one of the most transformative and personable figures in the media industry.

In personal remembrance, having encountered his warm and engaging personality firsthand, Turner was undoubtedly one of the most interesting and impactful individuals I've had the privilege to meet. His passing marks the end of an era for media innovation and his contributions to wrestling and television will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Ted Turner.
