Georgetown Hoyas 2024-25 Preview & Big East Basketball Predictions

We know it’s rebuilding time for Ed Cooley and the Hoyas, but nothing could have prepared us for how dreadful Georgetown was going to be in 2023-24. They picked up just a pair of wins in Big East play, both against DePaul in the regular season. It’s provided Cooley some time to reflect this offseason on the changing of the guard in the Big East.

“I remember being the youngest one here 15 years ago and answering these questions," said Cooley. “I remember Jim Calhoun and Rick Pitino in the league then. Huggins was in the league, Boeheim was in the league. If you’re around long enough, you’ll see a lot of things. Now being one of the elder statesman, it’s a testament to the staff and to the administrations that I’ve been fortunate to work with and for."

Whether it was considering himself an elder statesman of the Big East or referring to Martin Luther King Jr. when discussing rumors of him taking the Virginia job, it’s been a bumpy start to Cooley’s time at Georgetown. Here’s to 2024-25 being a season of improvement for the program.

Volume shooter Jayden Epps returns for the Hoyas, who got to 18.5 points per game in 2023-24 by shooting below 40 percent from the field on the year. Those numbers will need to improve this season, and that may only happen if others are willing to take some of the workload off his shoulders.

Enter Harvard transfer Malik Mack. The Ivy League product was one of the best freshmen in the country last season and will be thrust right into the spotlight of the Big East as a starter alongside Epps in this backcourt. It will be paramount for the team’s offensive improvement for Mack to shoulder some of the scoring duties and take some of the attention away from Epps on the scouting report. Micah Peavy is also a quality pickup for the Hoyas as an experienced power conference transfer who will provide versatility to the starting lineup.

Georgetown Hoyas Prediction

We don’t see things being much better for Georgetown this season, and that then begs the question. How does this thing end? Ed Cooley was brought in to be the savior of a sleeping giant in the Big East, and it has not gone according to plan. If another season falls by the wayside, do the whispers turn to shouts? Things could get interesting quickly in D.C. if this team fulfills our ranking of 11th in 2024-25.
