Arch Manning's Texas Future Faces a Critical Test This Weekend

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Arch Manning Faces Growing Pressure as Texas Enters a Crucial Stretch

The matchup between Mississippi State and Texas could become a major story this weekend, with Arch Manning’s future in Austin emerging as an important subplot. With the possibility of more losses and a game against Texas A&M still ahead, time may be running short for Manning to prove himself.

There is an argument for giving Manning as much time as possible to prepare for a professional career. The Manning family’s apparent expectation has been that he will remain at Texas for a long time, regardless of how this season unfolds. At the same time, Steve Sarkisian has made it clear that Manning must perform at a certain level to keep his job this season.

That creates a difficult middle ground. Manning could play well enough to remain the starter without playing well enough to justify leaving for the NFL. The result is a level of tension in Austin that does not appear beneficial for the program.

Texas enters the weekend as a 20-point favorite, while Kamario Taylor is done for the year. Covering the spread is not necessarily the standard, but the game cannot remain close late into the night. Texas needs a comfortable blowout, something the team has struggled to deliver consistently.

A change of environment was also raised as a possibility, with Columbus, Miami or Ole Miss mentioned as potential destinations. However, if Manning is good enough to play for another major program, he should also be capable of succeeding at Texas.

Sarkisian’s reputation could complicate any potential move. If he no longer wanted Manning, other major programs might be more inclined to trust Sarkisian’s evaluation. Texas already provides extensive resources and a top five-star roster, making Manning’s inability to win there difficult to explain.
