Notre Dame-BYU Clock Controversy Exposes Officiating

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Pushing The Odds with Matt Perrault

Late-Game Clock Decisions Deny Notre Dame a Final Play at BYU

The biggest storyline is Notre Dame getting robbed at BYU. Michigan received one second back on the clock at home for its Hail Mary, but Notre Dame did not get the same opportunity on the road against BYU.

After the game, the Big 12 acknowledged that the officiating crew had made a mistake and that Notre Dame should have received one more play. Michigan got the benefit at home, while Notre Dame did not on the road.

College football has a major problem with end-of-game situations, and it needs to be addressed immediately. There must be clearer standards for when the clock starts, when it stops, who controls it, and whether one second remains. This uncertainty should not determine a championship or a victory, including Michigan’s win against Western Michigan.
