Kentucky’s Efficiency and Oklahoma’s Offensive Struggles Shape the Betting Case
The Oklahoma Sooners are 6.5-point favorites against the Kentucky Wildcats. That number reflects how the teams were viewed entering the year: Oklahoma was considered a top-10 team, while Kentucky was unranked going into the LSU game despite a 4-1 record. The Wildcats have since climbed to No. 15.
Kentucky’s most recent road game came against South Carolina, where the Wildcats were 2.5-point underdogs. Asking whether Oklahoma is four points better than South Carolina offers one way to understand the current spread. Kentucky was also an 8.5- or 9.5-point home underdog against LSU before pulling off another upset.
The Wildcats continue to find ways to win, although repeating that success every week is difficult. Oklahoma, meanwhile, has new life after upsetting the Texas Longhorns. The number is understandable, but laying it with the Sooners is less appealing.
Kentucky has earned consecutive upset wins over South Carolina and LSU through quarterback efficiency, aggressive fourth-down decisions, and late-game execution. Kenny Miny has completed 67% of his passes and thrown only one interception in 178 attempts. The Wildcats are doing the small things well.
That efficiency will matter against an Oklahoma defense that ranks first nationally in EPA per play and sits in the top 10 in yards and points allowed. However, the Sooners have struggled offensively. Their 27 points against Texas were their most this season outside of a 51-0 win over UTEP, and two defensive or special teams touchdowns accounted for 14 of those 27 points. Oklahoma also scored a combined 37 points against New Mexico, Georgia, and Michigan.
Kentucky has not played great defense, even in its victories. The Wildcats have won close games, including a 35-34 result, prevailed on two-point conversions in overtime, and allowed at least 21 points in nearly every game. Oklahoma may end Kentucky’s dream season in Norman, but a blowout is difficult to expect from a team that has not routed anyone other than UTEP.
The Sooners lost to Michigan, struggled against New Mexico, and needed a rally against Texas. Kentucky has already shown it can win these games, defeating A&M, South Carolina, and LSU with efficiency and smart decisions under Will Stein.
The preferred side is Kentucky at plus seven. The case is driven more by Oklahoma’s inability to score than anything else. Including the UTEP game, the Sooners average 23 points per game. Against power-conference opponents, that figure drops to 17.
Kentucky is also unlikely to produce a big offensive number in Norman, making Oklahoma’s offensive limitations even more important. With the total sitting about five points higher than it was for the Red River rivalry, the matchup points toward another game in which the Sooners may struggle to create enough separation to cover the spread.
