Oregon State Team Total Bet and Heisman Receiver Debate

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From SportsGrid College Football Today

Oregon State Team Total Takes Center Stage as Jesse Legree Draws Heisman Attention

Oregon State remains unranked and in the receiving-votes category after losing its first two games, but the Beavers have become an exciting team that draws attention every week. Their late-night trip to Fresno State presents another opportunity for their high-scoring offense.

Oregon State’s team total over 32.5 is the pick. Fresno State’s defensive numbers look respectable after games against Sacramento State and Washington State, but Oregon State represents a step up in competition. Fresno State allowed 39 points and 500 yards against USC, then surrendered 38 points and 500 yards against Boise.

The Beavers have scored at least 33 points in each of their past five games, winning all five. Their only failures to reach 30 came against ranked Houston and ranked Texas Tech. Fresno State is not Houston or Texas Tech, and Oregon State is expected to score often, with the potential to reach 40 points.

Jesse Legree has also emerged as a major individual storyline for 5-2 Oregon State. At 30-to-1 to win the Heisman Trophy, Legree has recorded 100 receiving yards and a touchdown in every game. He leads the country with 14 touchdowns and 1,040 receiving yards, while Heisman favorite Jeremiah Smith has 12 touchdowns and 984 yards.

Those numbers could push Legree into the Belitnikov discussion, but they are unlikely to damage Smith’s Heisman campaign. The award is not based entirely on statistics; media attention and the caliber of competition also matter. Smith has delivered game-changing plays against stronger opponents and remains the favorite for a reason.

If Smith does not win, the expectation is that the award will go to a quarterback rather than a receiver with better statistics against inferior opponents. Legree’s production has been impressive, but voters have seen Smith make remarkable, game-changing plays every week. Smith’s visibility and the level of competition he has faced give him a significant advantage.
