Road to Super Bowl LXI: Predicting the 14-Team NFL Playoff Field Heading Into Week 8

Seven weeks of the 2026 NFL season are in the books, and October football just unleashed pure mayhem across both conferences! From the Seahawks completely suffocating the unblemished Chiefs in Seattle to the 49ers stumbling in Atlanta, the Cowboys dominating Monday Night Football in Philadelphia, and the Bengals lighting up Baltimore, the postseason bracket is going through an absolute blender.

Heading into Week 8, here is our updated projection for how the 14-team NFL playoff field will stack up come January.
7. Baltimore Ravens (4-3)
AFC Wildcard (No. 7 Seed)
- The Drivers: Tyler Huntley threw for 258 yards and a touchdown (23/34) while Derrick Henry ran for 45 yards on 17 carries in a tough 35-13 loss to Cincinnati.
- Why They Snag Seed 7: Baltimore averages 366.4 total yards per game behind a ground attack churning out 141.7 rushing yards per game, supported by a +1 turnover differential. Lamar Jackson should be back as early as this week.
- The Outlook: Despite a division setback, the Ravens' physical run scheme gives them the floor needed to hold onto the final AFC wildcard spot.
6. New England Patriots (4-3)
AFC Wildcard (No. 6 Seed)
- The Drivers: Drake Maye threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns (24/31) in a gritty Thursday night battle, coming up just short in a 30-24 road loss to Chicago.
- Why They Snag Seed 6: New England's offense averages 375.0 total yards per game (253.0 passing yards per game), while Mike Vrabel's defense allows 20.4 points per game.
- The Outlook: Maye’s rapid progression keeps the Patriots dangerous, locking down the #6 wildcard slot.
5. Denver Broncos (5-2)
AFC Wildcard (No. 5 Seed)
- The Drivers: Bo Nix controlled the ground game (7 CAR, 73 YDS, 1 TD) as Denver pulled away for a decisive 30-16 road win over Arizona.
- Why They Snag Seed 5: The Broncos climb to the #5 seed at 5-2, supported by Vance Joseph's defense surrendering just 20.1 points per game and racking up 10 takeaways (+4 turnover differential).
- The Outlook: Denver’s defense and steady fourth-quarter execution give them the firmest wildcard foundation in the conference.
4. Cincinnati Bengals (4-2)
AFC North Champion
- The Drivers: Joe Burrow and the Bengals dismantled Baltimore 35-13 on the road, highlighted by an explosive afternoon from wideout Tee Higgins (6 REC, 148 YDS, 1 TD).
- Why They Win the North: Cincinnati takes over the division lead with an offense ranking fourth in the NFL in scoring at 27.2 points per game (163 total points), backed by a defense allowing 20.3 points per game with 9 takeaways (+3 differential). I have no faith in Cleveland or the Steelers hanging around late into the season.
- The Outlook: Burrow’s downfield passing attack is catching fire at the right time, giving the Bengals the highest ceiling in a loaded AFC North.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2)
AFC South Champion
- The Drivers: Trevor Lawrence and Liam Coen’s group rested on their Week 7 bye, sitting in first place in the AFC South.
- Why They Hold Seed 3: Jacksonville boasts the NFL's #1 rushing defense, surrendering a microscopic 72.2 rushing yards per game, and ranks third in scoring defense at 17.3 points per game allowed (104 total points allowed) with a +5 turnover differential.
- The Outlook: An elite front seven paired with an offense producing 347.7 total yards per game keeps Jacksonville in complete command of the South.
2. Kansas City Chiefs (5-1)
AFC West Champion
- The Drivers: Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs took their first punch of the autumn, falling 20-3 on the road to Seattle's top-ranked defense.
- Why They Win the West: Kansas City still controls the AFC West at 5-1, fielding the NFL's #2 scoring defense at 17.2 points per game allowed (103 total points allowed), an offense generating 380.5 total yards per game, and a +5 turnover differential (10 takeaways).
- The Outlook: A rainy road stumble against a ferocious Seattle secondary won't derail Andy Reid's squad, who remain heavy favorites to lock down the West.
1. Buffalo Bills (5-1)
AFC East Champion
- The Drivers: Josh Allen and the Bills enjoyed a well-timed Week 7 bye, resting up with the conference's premier record at 5-1.
- Why They Own the Top Seed: Buffalo paces the entire NFL in scoring offense at 32.8 points per game (197 total points) and averages 387.7 total yards per game.
- The Outlook: With unmatched scoring efficiency and Kansas City finally taking its first loss, Buffalo holds the inside track to the AFC's lone 1st-round bye.
7. Green Bay Packers (4-3)
NFC Wildcard (No. 7 Seed)
- The Drivers: Jordan Love and the Packers came up just short in a tight 20-17 divisional battle at Detroit.
- Why They Snag Seed 7: Green Bay holds onto the final wildcard ticket at 4-3 behind an opportunistic defense that leads the entire NFL with 13 takeaways (9 interceptions) and a +5 turnover differential, surrendering just 20.7 points per game.
- The Outlook: Jonathan Gannon’s defense consistently creates turnovers, giving Green Bay the edge to stay inside the NFC playoff field.
6. Seattle Seahawks (4-3)
NFC Wildcard (No. 6 Seed)
- The Drivers: Sam Darnold (20/28, 257 YDS, 1 TD), Emanuel Wilson (24 CAR, 100 YDS, 1 TD), and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (9 REC, 150 YDS, 1 TD) led a dominant 20-3 beatdown of the undefeated Chiefs. Seattle's getting healthier, with Zach Charbonnet expected back this week, and just traded for Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson.
- Why They Snag Seed 6: Seattle holds the undisputed #1 total defense in the NFL (233.9 yards allowed per game) and #1 pass defense (144.4 passing yards allowed per game), allowing just 17.9 points per game with 12 takeaways.
- The Outlook: Smothering Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City to just three points proved Seattle's defense can dictate terms against anyone.
5. Chicago Bears (5-2)
NFC Wildcard (No. 5 Seed)
- The Drivers: Caleb Williams tossed two touchdown passes, D'Andre Swift ground out 78 yards on 22 carries, and Luther Burden III exploded for 130 yards and a touchdown on four catches in a 30-24 win over New England.
- Why They Snag Seed 5: Chicago claims the top wildcard spot at 5-2, boasting the NFL's #3 total offense (390.7 yards per game) and a rushing attack pounding out 154.3 yards per game alongside a defense allowing 20.4 points per game.
- The Outlook: Ben Johnson’s offense is firing on all cylinders, making Chicago a formidable wildcard powerhouse.
4. Carolina Panthers (3-3)
NFC South Champion
- The Drivers: Bryce Young found Darren Waller for a 50-yard touchdown strike, but Carolina dropped a tough 43-13 divisional battle to Tampa Bay.
- Why They Hold Seed 4: Despite the stumble, Carolina holds the projected divisional crown at 3-3, backed by an offense generating 381.3 total yards per game and 26.5 points per game (6th in NFL).
- The Outlook: Dave Canales must tighten up a defense surrendering 27.7 points per game to maintain Carolina's postseason standing.
3. Dallas Cowboys (3-4)
NFC East Champion
- The Drivers: Dak Prescott was lethal on Monday Night Football (15/27, 212 YDS, 3 TD), connecting twice with CeeDee Lamb (5 REC, 74 YDS, 2 TD) while Javonte Williams ran wild for 155 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in a 38-21 statement road win over Philadelphia.
- Why They Win the East: Dallas jumps into the #3 seed with an offense ranking fifth in the NFL in scoring at 27.0 points per game (189 total points) and generating 353.6 total yards per game.
- The Outlook: When Williams is establishing the run and Prescott is protecting the football, the Cowboys have the offensive firepower to take over the NFC East.
2. Minnesota Vikings (6-0)
NFC North Champion
- The Drivers: Kyler Murray (14/24, 150 YDS, 1 TD) and Justin Jefferson guided Minnesota to a hard-fought 16-10 victory over Indianapolis.
- Why They Take Seed 2: The Vikings stand as the only undefeated team in the entire NFL at 6-0. Brian Flores' defense leads the league in scoring defense, giving up a microscopic 12.3 points per game (74 total points allowed) with an NFL-best +7 turnover differential (11 takeaways).
- The Outlook: Unbeaten and historically stingy against the pass (155.0 yards allowed per game), Minnesota holds the #2 seed and complete control of the NFC North.
1. San Francisco 49ers (6-1)
NFC West Champion
- The Drivers: Brock Purdy threw for 288 yards and a touchdown (27/40), connecting with tight end George Kittle (8 REC, 88 YDS) while Kaelon Black ran for 63 yards and a score in a 29-20 road loss to Atlanta.
- Why They Own the Top Seed: Even after their first defeat of the season, the 49ers retain the NFC's #1 seed behind the conference's best scoring attack at 28.1 points per game (197 total points, 3rd in NFL) and a defense allowing 19.9 points per game.
- The Outlook: Kyle Shanahan’s machine averages 371.4 total yards per game, keeping them in pole position for home-field advantage throughout January.
