Questions Surround Buffalo’s Defense as the Bears and Panthers Draw Interest
The Buffalo Bills may be sitting atop the AFC East, but questions remain about whether their current style of play is sustainable. Their situation feels similar to last season, with hopes that the defense will improve over the next three or four weeks and produce a different result in the playoffs.
Buffalo could win 12 or 13 games, claim the division and secure a bye. However, the concern is that the Bills could once again reach a crucial playoff game only to be eliminated when their defense cannot make a late stop. Whether the opponent is Baltimore, Kansas City or another team, Buffalo will eventually need to play better defense to advance through the later rounds.
The Bills remain one of the NFL’s best three or four teams, but they do not look significantly different from a year ago. Josh Allen is still running frequently and throwing to many of the same receivers. The notable offensive change is Keon Coleman, who has played well while Moore has been hurt.
Few teams across the league look great. Kansas City and San Francisco belong at the top, with Buffalo potentially occupying its own tier immediately behind them. Baltimore also remains a threat with Lamar Jackson, while much of the rest of the league appears mediocre.
Looking ahead, the Bears remain one of the most interesting teams with an opportunity to rise significantly. There is still a belief that they may have something special, even if it is not yet clear how far they can go.
Carolina has also emerged as a dark horse after beating Philadelphia on the road. That performance strengthened the belief that Carolina could win its division fairly easily and make some noise. The Panthers have become one of the season’s most surprising teams.
