Chiefs-Broncos Betting Action and Concerns About Sportsbook Promotion
The Chiefs scored three points and failed to reach the red zone against the Seahawks, marking the first time that has happened in the Patrick Mahomes era. They now go on the road to face their archrival, the Broncos.
The under may be the main betting consideration in this matchup. Denver is receiving 89% of the action, although there is no master money involved and the game currently has very low volume. On the total, 61% of the action is on the under, while the Masters are fairly balanced at 40.5.
The discussion then turned to the Chiefs’ official X account publicizing the total offered by the team’s sportsbook partner. The question was whether official team accounts should promote betting lines while the industry is trying to avoid regulatory issues and scrutiny from attorneys general.
The response was that teams should stay away from such promotions, especially given the current legal environment. There are 123 lawsuits across 28 states involving prediction markets, while Utah has filed criminal charges against Kelsey and others.
While leagues may enter partnerships that extend to teams, individual teams were advised not to push further into sportsbook promotion. The discussion also supported banning television betting advertisements, as Australia has done.
One of the biggest complaints roughly eight to eight-and-a-half years after Pasper is that betting promotion is constantly placed in front of audiences, including underage viewers. For that reason, there was no perceived need for teams to publicize sportsbook totals through their official accounts.
