Chiefs vs. Chargers: Odds, Trends and Betting Preview

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From NFL Pro Football Today

Chiefs Favored Over Struggling Chargers in AFC West Matchup

The Chargers face the Chiefs in Kansas City at 1 p.m. Eastern, with the Chiefs favored by 7.5 points. Although the Chargers have struggled to get out of their own way, they have begun keeping games close and covering larger spreads. The divisional rivalry and the teams’ history of memorable battles make laying the points with Kansas City a difficult proposition.

Andy Reid’s record after a bye was cited as a major reason to favor the Chiefs. Reid is 22-5 after a bye, an .815 winning percentage, and 6-2 with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback over that span. Kansas City also has additional preparation time and understands the importance of earning a home victory against a divisional opponent.

There is little confidence in the Chargers amid a disastrous season marked by infighting and finger-pointing. Questions were raised about Mike McDaniel’s offensive coordinator duties, while the team’s run game remains unsettled and Ladd McConkey’s health has been a concern. Justin Herbert has also played the worst football of his career after beginning his NFL career by breaking a rookie record for passing yards.

Kansas City is expected to control the game throughout. Ken Walker could receive significant usage coming off the bye, while Rashee Rice’s health may create opportunities for Kelce, Noah Gray, Xavier Worthy and possibly Cyrus Allen.

One view was that the Chargers have no answer for Kansas City and cannot be trusted to cover. The opposing view acknowledged the Chiefs’ dominance and the Chargers’ lack of former weapons such as Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, but still declined to lay 7.5 points in a divisional game.
