Colts Urged to Chase the Future After Unacceptable Home Loss
Losing at home to an 0-5 divisional opponent was unacceptable, and there were always going to be ramifications. Barring a dramatic turnaround, Stein could be next.
Carly Irsay deserves credit for becoming heavily involved after her father died and she suddenly found herself as the owner. It remains to be seen whether she will do a good job, but she has taken the responsibility head-on.
The Colts should consider moving in a different direction. With no chance of winning the Super Bowl this season and only a possible playoff appearance ahead, they should trade Jonathan Taylor and other top players to build for the future. After five years of bringing in players such as Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan and hovering around .500, it may be time to take a year or two and rebuild.
Jonathan Taylor could bring back a valuable return because he remains a premier running back. That approach would make sense, especially as the league has started placing more emphasis on the running game.
Firing a general manager midway through the season does not usually signal that a team intends to make a run. The Colts previously fired a head coach and brought in Jeff Saturday, which did not go well. This time, the general manager was the easiest move because his departure appeared inevitable after 10 years with the organization and the franchise’s moves last season.
Heads were bound to roll after the Colts lost at home to Tennessee despite outgaining them by more than 200 yards. The result was not acceptable, and Stein may ultimately be the next person to go.
