Drake Maye Must Stay Composed With A.J. Brown's Return

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Pushing The Odds with Matt Perrault

Drake May Must Stay Composed if AJ Brown Joins the Patriots

Drake May looked more composed against the Raiders than he did at the beginning of the season. There is still some goofiness in his game, but he has stopped forcing as many plays and is doing a better job of taking what the defense gives him.

The Raiders had been a two-high-coverage-heavy team, but they shifted to single-high coverage because they were having trouble stopping the run. New England responded by returning to a matchup-based offense reminiscent of previous Josh McDaniels systems.

The question is how the possible addition of AJ Brown would affect May. The quarterback cannot fall into the mindset that he needs to force the ball to Brown. Josh McDaniels and the coaching staff should emphasize that May must continue running the offense and taking what the defense gives him.

Brown will likely get his opportunities, but the offense should not be driven by whether he receives seven targets or becomes frustrated because he does not get 10. Whether Brown returns this week or later, May staying composed and avoiding forced throws will be the key to consistently running the offense.
