Jalen Hurts Out for Season: Eagles Face Tough Decisions

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Jalen Hurts’ Health and Contract Questions Leave the Eagles Facing an Uncertain Future

The major news is that Jalen Hurts will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after multiple blood clots were found in his lungs.

Hurts had complained about a calf injury following the Rams game. The Eagles practiced him and traveled to England, where an ultrasound revealed a blood clot after the team landed. He was then taken to a hospital, where he remained for four hours.

Hurts was reportedly told not to sleep on the flight because it could cause the clot to travel deeper. That raises questions about why he was allowed to play a full football game, fly home and return to practice. A second ultrasound was conducted, and he was shut down before the game against the Panthers.

The NFL Players Association will likely examine how the situation was handled. Nicole Lynn, president of Klutch Sports, has theoretically shut Hurts down for the rest of the season after his representatives did not receive the information they needed from the Eagles and the league.

The situation also creates uncertainty about Hurts’ future in Philadelphia. Only $20 million is guaranteed on his contract moving forward, and it is difficult to imagine Lynn allowing him to enter the 2027 season without a new extension. At the same time, people in Philadelphia have questioned whether Hurts remains the quarterback the Eagles want to build around. Based on his 2026 body of work, he has not played like a $60 million-per-year player.

Nick Sirianni’s status is another major question. Every coach has a shelf life, and there comes a point when the voices in the room may stop listening to the head coach. The Eagles have moved on from successful coaches before, including Andy Reid and Super Bowl-winning coach Doug Pederson. Sirianni could now enter that conversation.

The struggles of Hurts and Sirianni have also exposed problems with the roster. Howie Roseman has missed on numerous draft picks and free agents over the past two years. John Campbell has not made the impact expected from a first-round pick out of Alabama. Moving on from Nakobe Dean has looked like a downgrade, with Dean now playing well in Las Vegas. Jonathan Gernard has also been in and out of the lineup.

The organization is in flux, and there is a real possibility that Hurts or Sirianni may not return for the 2027 season. Starting over would bring another system and potentially another head coach for a quarterback who has already worked with numerous coordinators during his time in Philadelphia.

Hurts is a unique quarterback rather than an elite one. He is not the type of player who will consistently sit back and dissect secondaries like Joe Burrow or Josh Allen. However, he is smart, he has his own set of tools, and he knows how to win football games. His résumé in Philadelphia reflects that.

The next few weeks will reveal a great deal about the futures of both Hurts and Sirianni. Above all, Godspeed to Jalen Hurts and his health.
