Jesse Minter's Future in Baltimore Amid Defensive Woes

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Pushing The Odds with Matt Perrault

Jesse Minter’s Future in Baltimore May Hinge on Locker Room Support

Jesse Minter is facing criticism from inside and outside Baltimore. The team is 4-3, and its defense has allowed the most points in the division. The situation has prompted comparisons to the Patriots and the difficulty of being the coach who replaces an established figure such as Harbaugh or Belichick.

Minter’s future could come down to two important factors: whether the team continues to fight on every down and whether he still has the support of the locker room in Weeks 13 and 15. If either is in question, ownership may have to consider whether Minter was ready to become a head coach.

Some coaches are better suited to coordinator roles. Brian Flores, Josh McDaniels and Steve Spagnolo were cited as examples of coaches who can excel as coordinators without necessarily being the right fit for a head coaching position. The same principle applies outside football: Some people thrive in assistant or middle-management roles but are not suited to be the primary decision-maker.

The factors behind the scenes will ultimately help define Minter’s tenure and determine whether he becomes a one-and-done coach. However, he will likely receive a second season because Eric DeCosta tied his future to the young coach and may give him time to grow into the role after a difficult start.

Hiring decisions are difficult because an organization does not truly know someone until that person is in the building. After a month or several months, the organization begins to understand who it hired beyond what it learned during the interview process.
