Lions Hand Vikings First Loss in Thrilling NFC North Showdown

Lions Hand Vikings Their First Loss as NFC North Remains Crowded
The Lions defeated the Vikings, ending Minnesota’s 11-game regular-season winning streak dating back to last year. Detroit improved to 5-2, while Minnesota fell to 6-1. Chicago entered Monday Night Football at 5-2, and Green Bay stood at 5-3, leaving every team in the NFC North with at least five wins.
The crowded division could leave at least one NFC North team out of the playoffs, particularly if two teams from the NFC West qualify. That makes the rest of the season especially important for all four teams.
Minnesota’s running game emerged as a major concern. Kyler Murray led the team with four carries for 35 yards, while Jahmyr Gibbs recorded 23 carries for Detroit. Gibbs finished with 153 rushing yards against a defense described as the best in football. In a game where both teams scored fewer than 20 points, Detroit’s ability to run the ball made a significant difference.
Justin Jefferson also remains underused despite maintaining a professional approach. He received nine targets and needed a remarkable catch to record a touchdown. A receiver of his caliber should be seeing at least 14 or 15 targets per game, similar to the volume given to players such as Puka Nacua, JSN and Brock Bowers.
Kyler Murray has not solved Minnesota’s passing-game problems. He finished with 200 passing yards against a Detroit pass defense that entered the game ranked last in the NFL. Even with Jefferson available, Minnesota has struggled to get the ball to him consistently.
