Packers Improve to 5-3, but Questions Remain About Their Run Game and Special Teams
The Packers moved to 5-3 with a win over the Panthers, prompting a reassessment of a Green Bay team that had been expected to struggle. Although the Packers recently lost to Detroit, they remain in the NFC North mix as Carolina falls to 3-4 following its second consecutive loss.
Despite Green Bay’s recent success, concerns remain about the strength of its victories. The Packers’ wins have come against the Jets, the Buccaneers without Baker Mayfield, the Bears without Caleb Williams, the Cowboys and the Panthers.
The lack of a productive running game against Carolina was especially troubling. Other teams have consistently run the ball effectively against the Panthers, but Green Bay was unable to generate the same kind of success. The Packers also dealt with dropped passes, though their offense improved once those mistakes subsided.
Green Bay deserves credit for beating the teams on its schedule. Its decisive performance against Chicago was cited as an example of a productive team taking care of an overmatched opponent. The Panthers game was less convincing, however, as Carolina still had an opportunity to win if it had converted on third or fourth down and Bryce Young had delivered more accurate passes.
The Packers also face concerns on special teams. Trey Smack missed a PAT off the left upright, marking his eighth missed kick of the season. That inconsistency could become a significant issue in close games, particularly if Green Bay reaches January football. The team also fumbled the opening kickoff, adding another special-teams problem to address.
