Packers-Panthers Outlook: A Close Game and Chuba Hubbard Props
Week 8 of the NFL season kicks off with the Green Bay Packers hosting the Carolina Panthers. Green Bay is coming off a short week and a loss to Detroit, while Carolina is looking to rebound after four turnovers helped bury the team early against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Despite the loss, Carolina outgained Tampa Bay in nearly every offensive category. Both teams are also dealing with offensive-line injuries. Green Bay is down to a backup center, while Carolina has two starting offensive linemen out.
The total is hovering around 47, with Green Bay favored by 3 to 3.5 points in most spots. The expectation is another close Packers game, as Green Bay has consistently played tight contests this season, whether winning or losing.
Carolina remains difficult to assess. The Panthers were crushed by Chicago and Tampa Bay but looked excellent in their other games, including a road win over Philadelphia as a favorite. That inconsistency makes it difficult to recommend taking the points confidently, even at +3.5.
This matchup could resemble the Detroit-Green Bay game, with one late field goal, turnover or decisive play determining the outcome. Carolina may find a way to cover, but its two lopsided losses make a side difficult to back responsibly.
Chuba Hubbard is the most appealing prop option for Carolina. His previous performance was his worst in roughly a year, largely because the Panthers fell too far behind. A bounce-back game could put the over on his rushing attempts and yards in play, along with an anytime touchdown. A ladder on his rushing yards could also be worth considering.
Green Bay’s receiver props are less attractive. Golden is expected to play, but there are questions about his health. Watson was a major factor earlier in the season but has been less involved over the past couple of games. With Golden’s injury adding uncertainty, staying away from the Packers’ receivers may be the safest approach.
Carolina’s recent betting trends are striking. Since Canales took over, the Panthers are 16-1 against the spread in their last 17 games following a loss and 15-0 against the spread as an underdog in the following game. Those trends do not guarantee a result, but they suggest the market has repeatedly overreacted after Carolina’s poor performances.
The Panthers’ loss to Tampa Bay got away from them primarily because they finished minus-four in turnovers. Even with that disadvantage, Carolina was outgained by only 59 yards. The combination of Carolina’s bounce-back history and Green Bay’s tendency to play close games points toward another tightly contested matchup.
