Tennessee Releases Defensive Player Following Firearm Incident
Tennessee released a defensive player after he reportedly went to his car to retrieve a firearm during a confrontation with a teammate. Although nothing ultimately happened, the organization decided the situation required a firm response.
Head coach Robert Salah appeared supportive of the player but acknowledged that the team had to release him under its policy. His comments also left the door open for another team to give the player an opportunity, suggesting that he is a good person who violated Tennessee’s rules.
The player could sign elsewhere in the coming weeks. Possessing a firearm is not illegal, but the circumstances surrounding the confrontation changed the situation and forced Tennessee to act.
The incident also came shortly after Tennessee earned a win against Indianapolis. The team’s difficult season has placed additional pressure on Salah. If Tennessee finishes 2-15, he could be one and done, as coaches rarely survive that type of record in the NFL.
Tennessee may have viewed four or five wins as its worst-case scenario entering the season. Now, there is uncertainty over whether the team will win another game.
