Tom Brady’s Broadcasting Role Raises Questions About Trust and Team Ownership

Tom Brady appears to be coming out of his shell after retiring, but legendary players often have to maintain a focused public persona throughout their careers. On the field and in practice, their demeanor establishes a routine and shows teammates how they intend to compete and win. Away from the game, their personalities may be much different.

Expectations for Brady as a color commentator were not especially high, but he has proven to be very good in the role. Retirement gives players an opportunity to show a different side of themselves, though leaving professional sports is unlike stepping away from a typical job.

Brady’s work as a commentator while remaining a co-owner of the Raiders has also generated controversy. Before games, broadcasters have access to managers and coaches, who may discuss details about what their teams plan to implement or experiment with during a game.

That access could become complicated when Brady covers teams that play the Raiders twice a year. Coaches may wonder whether to hold back during their meetings with him, while Brady must be trusted as a broadcaster, team owner and person. Earning that personal trust can open an avenue into people’s hearts and homes.
