Troy Aikman Signals Monday Night Football Exit as ESPN Deal Ends

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Pushing The Odds with Matt Perrault

Troy Aikman’s Free Agency Raises Questions About ESPN’s Monday Night Football Booth

Troy Aikman discussed his future with ESPN after this season, saying, “There’s probably a time and a place for all that. I don’t know if now is the time. I’ll broadcast this season, and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I’m looking forward to whatever the rest of the season does hold, the Super Bowl and all that, and where my next landing spot may be.”

Those comments were interpreted as confirmation that Aikman’s long-running partnership with Joe Buck could be approaching its final broadcast. The stability and quality of their Monday Night Football booth have made the possibility of a split particularly surprising.

Buck has signed a contract, but Aikman’s future alongside him was not guaranteed. The segment argued that separating the broadcasting partners could ultimately prove to be a mistake, especially given how many years they have worked together.

Pat McAfee has denied rumors that he could join Buck in the booth. The segment maintained that pairing McAfee with Buck would be a poor fit and suggested Tony Romo as another possible option. Jason Kelce was also dismissed as a potential replacement because of the scale of the role.

Aikman is expected to attract interest quickly if he leaves ESPN. One possibility raised during the segment was a partnership between Aikman and Jim Nantz at CBS, depending on what the network decides to do with its top broadcast team.

Aikman’s public comments could also make the remainder of the season uncomfortable. Any disagreement or tension between Aikman and Buck may now attract additional attention, particularly after reports that the two had an argument before smoothing things over.

ESPN and ABC have the Super Bowl, with Aikman and Buck scheduled to call the game together. If Aikman does leave ESPN, the Super Bowl would become the final broadcast of their Monday Night Football partnership, creating an especially awkward conclusion to the season.
