Vikings’ 6-0 Start Faces Major Test Against Detroit Lions

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Vikings’ Unbeaten Start Faces a Major Test Against Detroit

Minnesota’s 6-0 start is raising questions ahead of its trip to Detroit. The Vikings have scored four touchdowns over their last 42 possessions across four games, while their favorable schedule and a series of fortunate breaks have made their success feel unsustainable.

The Vikings needed a dramatic comeback against Green Bay, including a 68-yard touchdown return and two Green Bay turnovers in the final two minutes. Carson Wentz, rather than Kyler Murray, won that game. Minnesota also benefited from poor weather against Chicago before Kayla Williams was injured.

Detroit represents the first offense on Minnesota’s schedule that could truly put the Vikings to the test. If the Lions build a two-score lead at home, Minnesota may not have the offense needed to erase a 10-point deficit.

There are still reasons to be skeptical of Detroit. The Lions have had several years with a strong offense, but Ben Johnson has left, and the defense has remained a concern. Their close, low-scoring win over Green Bay did little to settle questions about whether they can capitalize on their opportunity to reach or win a Super Bowl.

Detroit previously appeared positioned for sustained success with Amon Ra, Gibbs and Montgomery, but the team never took the next step. Its loss to Washington in the playoffs was viewed as its best opportunity to reach the Super Bowl, and another late-season decline remains possible.

However, Detroit’s defensive struggles may have overshadowed Jared Goff’s performance. Through six games, Goff has 14 touchdown passes, 1,788 yards, no interceptions and a 112.5 QBR. Branch returned last week, while Kirby Joseph is expected back this week, giving Detroit a chance to show what it can do with a fuller complement of players on both sides of the ball.

The opposing view is that Minnesota’s defense is strong enough to keep the game close. While the Vikings may not be as good as their unbeaten record suggests, their defense could prevent Detroit from building the kind of large lead that would expose Minnesota’s offensive limitations.
