We're getting the ice advice down the right side, Joe Raniero. Let's welcome in Troy Perlowitz here. We need some NHL talk. We went to one of the experts. Troy, thank you for joining us this morning. Thanks so much for having me on. Appreciate it, guys. Let's have some fun and talk some NHL action. Now granted, it's still early in the season, and we know that the playoff race will start to ramp up in February, March as we get to April, but some big games on the ticket last night. And one of the teams that we always love to talk about, one of the more exciting teams is the Edmonton Oilers. Troy, they had a home game yesterday against the Sabres, lost that 4 to 3 in overtime. They now sit at 13-11 on the season. Expectations certainly much higher than 13 and 11. What are you seeing early season from the Edmonton Oilers? And yeah, they lost in overtime yesterday. Yeah, it was an incredible night in the NHL last night. There were 44 game tying goals scored in the last minute of regulation, in the last 15 seconds of regulation, which is incredible, including one in Edmonton. Look, it's been a little up and down for the Oilers this year. Uh, they had some injury issues and that's causes some down. Connor McDavid hasn't, Connor McDavid and Leon Drytele haven't really got the point production yet, but I still trust them. And, you know, you have to remember when we're talking about teams like Edmonton and even Florida, those teams have played so many games in the playoffs the last two years. There's, there's some injury issues and some just tired legs for Florida. I mean, you lost Barkoff for the entire year. Kachchuck hasn't even played yet. Uh, Edmonton, uh, it, it's gonna be the same issues for them as they were last year. Uh, they dominated that game last night. I know they didn't win it, but they dominated that game last night. Scoring chances were almost 2 to 1 in that game. Uh, I, I think I trust them a lot more, especially getting Ryan Nugent Hopkins back to play in that top line with Connor McDavid. and lengthens them a little bit, but that same. Issue about their goaltending, that's not going away. It's up and down. It could be good. It could be really bad. It's just kind of a roller coaster ride with the Edmonton Oilers, but man, do they have a ton of offense. If they get all their horses back, I really do trust them going forward to come out of that Western Conference. So try, I had to actually look at this, clean my eyes, uh, refresh the screen. Did, did Nashville actually beat Colorado last night? Is that, they actually lost a game last night? Is that, what is that, 2 on this season? they should just pack their bags, no? Only 30 games, only 30 games into the regular season, and Colorado has only lost twice in regulation. It's just an amazing number. They, they lead the league in goals, they lead the league in goals or in goals against, uh, you know, last night, a, a, a couple of bad bounces. If you saw that, uh, that goal in 3rd period that Nashville scored from the blue line was, uh, that, that doesn't happen often. It just reminds you that hockey is such a fast. Game, the puck is just moves fast and sometimes you get bad bounces. Uh, Colorado's just a juggernaut this so far in the regular season. Nathan McKinnon and, and Cale McCaw are both leading their, uh, respective positions and points. Uh, yeah, I, I don't see Colorado. I think they're gonna challenge that, uh, Boston Bruins record from a couple of years ago in terms of regular season points. Remember, this is a team, uh, only 3 teams in the modern era. have ever led the league for an entire year in goals for and goals against. Colorado could be doing that. Remember, if you go back a year ago at this very moment for Colorado, their goalie tandem was Justice Anninen and, and Alexander Gergiev. They've really upgraded that position in the last year. It's really propelled their team, and, and we mentioned Nathan McKinnon. He's really found a lot of chemistry with Martin Neches on that top line. Uh, not a lot of, uh, teams can have the horses to contain them, and And they look incredible. So I, I do really think the regular season, uh, Colorado is really a dominant team, and I don't see them falling off very much. The playoffs is where it begins here. And again, we're a couple of months out from the playoffs. Some of these teams just trying to figure out exactly where they stand. The Colorado Avalanche right now are the favorites to win the Stanley Cup at a 390 price, followed by the Lightning, the Hurricanes, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Panthers. Then you have the Edmonton Oilers just on the outside, they're at about a 10 to 1 price. Before the season started, Troy, who did you like for the Stanley Cup and also, what are you seeing now once we're in the month of December? I'm gonna, I'm gonna need you guys to trust me on this one, but I really did like the Avalanche coming into the season because of the goaltending that I mentioned. Uh, you know, I, I, I, I am, there are two teams in the Western Conference, and we mentioned one of them that do give me some concern. And we mentioned the Edmonton Oilers. I still think they're a really powerful team if they get the goaltending to, to back up their offense. The other team that was on that board that you saw there, the Vegas Golden Knights, you know, they lost Mark Stone at the start of the year and it really seemed to hurt their power play and, you know, they struggled of late, but they have points in, in 16 of the last 18 games. They're a really strong team, that power play is. Really, uh, is, is great. And, and Jack Eichel is a superstar that not a lot of people talk about, you know, how much speed he, he brings to the game and, and really lengthens that lineup. Mitch Marner has come in and, you know, off-season edition from the Toronto Maple Leafs and, and he really lengthens that lineup and he really brings a defensive mindset, which, uh, not a lot of people like to talk about, but, uh, he really makes that team a lot stronger on the defensive end. Uh, and, and I think Vegas is a team I'd be worried about. Vegas and, you know, Vegas and Edmonton in the Pacific Division, uh, can, can, can, you know, if they get to the playoffs and, you know, they're battle-tested teams who have won Stanley Cups before. So I think that's the Colorado, once we get to the postseason, uh, it'll, it might be a little different story. Should I not buy into what Dallas is doing right now here, Troy? I, I mean, it's not like they don't have the experience. I mean, even Casey De Smith is winning games left and right. Yeah, you know, when you look at Dallas, they're, it's a, it's a team of depth, right? Like they don't really have one horse. They have, they have 7 horses, you know, they're like Noah's Ark, right? They have 2 of everything. It's, it's pretty incredible what they're doing. They got, they got Thomas Harley back into the lineup. That was really great to see, uh, you know, Dallas plays in that same division as Colorado, you know, they were a. 2-3 matchup in the playoffs last year. I, I think there's really gonna be a lot of incentive incentive for both teams to try to get that top spot in the division and, and avoid each other in the first round of the playoffs. I, I love Dallas, man, I really love that team. I love Jake Ottinger and net. He's been a little shaky so far at the start of the year, maybe looking towards the Olympic Games. I don't, I don't, I'm not really sure, but, uh, I, you know, Dallas is a team I really like a lot. They just have to stay healthy because like I said, they're a really deep team and they could score goals with anybody. Troy, the NHL of course, every year gives out an MVP trophy. It is the Hart Trophy. It looks like it's a battle in the West right now. Nathan McKinnon, Connor McDavid, and Jack Eichel are the favorites right now. If we had to put a stamp on who's the best player in the NHL now and who's winning this, who's that for you, Troy? It's still probably Nathan McKinnon for me. He's just, you know, he's, he's gonna have the point production to back that up. He has more 3-point games than 0 point games this year. That's an incredible stat, and I, I just think that it shows you how the point production is really there for him. Those young kids coming up though, it's really great to see it's the league is in a great spot when Connor Bernard and Macklin Celebrini are coming up, uh, as possible MVP candidates.
