Women’s 7s Rugby takes center stage after the Opening Ceremonies of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Twelve nations are vying for the Gold Medal, but we expect the usual suspects to be front and center when the knockout stage begins on July 29.
Group A features three powerhouses, with New Zealand, Canada, and Fiji all ranked within the top six this year. No one can touch the All Blacks, but Canada has the inside track over Fiji to finish second. Nevertheless, we have Fiji pegged as the seventh seed when the dust settles in group play. Those three nations will be joined by Australia, Ireland, the United States, France, and Great Britain in the quarterfinals.
Don’t expect anything too wild or crazy in the quarters. The presumptive chalk should all coast into the semis, with Canada narrowly escaping a fierce clash with the United States.
If things go as anticipated, that would set up a rematch of the 2020 Tokyo Gold Medal game between New Zealand and France, with the Canadians in tough versus Australia. Australis will dismantle Canada, with France pulling over a stunning upset over the heavily favored All Blacks on the strength of home-field advantage.
The French will not be denied their second straight gold medal as they defeat the slightly favored Australians in Tuesday’s championship bout.
