The United States’s picture-perfect start to Copa America on Sunday night was securing a 2-0 victory over Bolivia to put them in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. It was a complete performance from front to back, but Panama ought to provide a much more difficult test than the Bolivians, as the odds suggest. The United States was a much heavier -800 favorite in their previous match.
The Panamanians fought hard for most of their opening match against Uruguay, staying within a goal for most of the match after conceding in the 16th minute. It all fell apart in the 85th minute when Darwin Nunez rocketed a rebound into the back of the net, while Matias Vina worsened the goal difference with a third goal in stoppage time. They will be desperate to leave this match with at least a point to stay alive in this competition.
While the United States was able to shut down the Bolivian attack in the opener, they had allowed a goal in five of their six matches beforehand. The other angle here is that Panama will be stretched out if they concede first or if they find any openings they can attack. With their unique situation and desperation for a positive result following their loss to Uruguay, we’ll look for a higher-scoring match that includes contributions from the Panamanians.
