FIFA Congress in Paraguay Highlights Unity and Global Cooperation

For the first time, FIFA held its annual congress in Paraguay in 2025. This historic event was marked by FIFA President Gianni Infantino's advocacy for football as a tool to unite people worldwide amidst global instability. Emphasizing football's unifying power, Infantino shared insights from his recent meetings with world leaders, expressing a collective desire for peace and unity.

The Congress also addressed several key topics, including FIFA's strong financial health and the debut of the Club World Cup. Discussions at the 75th annual Congress also entertained the expansion of the World Cup to 64 teams by 2030, suggesting a significant evolution from the 48 teams in the 2026 World Cup and 32 in the 2022 iteration.

Amidst concerns regarding the U.S.'s perceived hostility towards foreign visitors under the Trump administration, Infantino reassured delegates about the welcoming nature of the upcoming World Cup hosts. A recent meeting with the White House Task Force on FIFA World Cups confirmed that the U.S. government is committed to welcoming all participants and fans. This message was echoed by Vittoria Montaglini, the Canadian president of CONCACAF, who emphasized that the trio of host countries, Canada, Mexico, and the USA, are open to all, contingent on individuals respecting local laws.
