FIFA Launches Elite Coaching Mentorship Program
In anticipation of the 2026 Men's World Cup and the 2025 Women's Euros, FIFA has rolled out the third edition of its elite performance coach mentorship program in Zurich. This ambitious 18-month program is designed to connect experienced coaches with emerging talents in the coaching world.
Addressing the significant gender disparity in sports coaching, the program is particularly focused on nurturing female coaches. Historically, there have been fewer female coaches, especially in high-profile roles within women's sports. To combat this, FIFA's initiative aims to reduce hurdles that prospective female coaches face, whether these barriers are financial, related to awareness, or support mechanisms.
The program boasts an impressive roster of mentors, including current national team coaches like Desiree Ellis from South Africa, Joe Monteamuro of Australia, and Angelo Marsiga from Colombia. They are paired with young mentees, such as former German international midfielder Melanie Behringer, aiding them in overcoming the isolation often felt in coaching roles and providing them with essential networks and tools for self-development and achieving personal goals.
By directly addressing and attempting to mitigate the unique challenges faced by female coaches aspiring to high-performance roles, FIFA's mentorship program serves as a critical step towards leveling the playing field in the global sports landscape.
