Tigres Gain Momentum as Liga MX Playoff Race Intensifies
Tigres delivered one of the weekend’s biggest results by defeating league leaders Toluca. Bruneta scored twice, including the opening goal in the sixth minute. After a difficult season and plenty of criticism, Tigres finally found some momentum.
Another dramatic match ended 1-1 against Monterrey. Rossi, a former LAFC player and one of our favorites, scored the opener before Bueno equalized. Borja was sent off in the 87th minute, adding to a weekend filled with emotion and important games.
Guadalajara and Atlas also produced a memorable Clásico Tapatío. Atlas appeared to be in control, but Chivas recovered late and earned a point in the 86th minute. Atlas needed the victory to strengthen its playoff position, while Chivas prevented its rival from taking all three points and remained near the top of the table.
Tigres have three wins and 13 points, leaving them two points away from playoff contention. There is still a possible path into the top eight, although it may require a remarkable run.
Pumas sit in 12th place with 13 points, one game away from entering La Liguilla. Monterrey also have one game in hand.
Cruz Azul, the champion, have fallen to seventh place. Atlas have lost some momentum but remain firmly in playoff contention. Querétaro have been the season’s biggest surprise, with Los Gallos Blancos sitting third in the standings.
Toluca and América have set the standard in Liga MX over the past two years, but both teams have concerns. América have not won convincingly over their past five games and drew their 110th-anniversary match after being hurt by a red card.
Toluca’s defense is also a major concern after conceding 15 goals. That weakness could become a significant problem in the playoffs and may give opponents an opportunity against one of the league’s top teams.
At the bottom of the table, Juárez have been unable to turn their season around. They have four points and a minus-18 goal differential, completing a disastrous campaign. Tigres may need a miracle to qualify, but the support for the LatiNation teams remains strong regardless of the outcome.
