América and Chivas Lead the Charge as the Liga MX Liguilla Approaches
Liga MX is heating up as the tournament approaches the Liguilla. América and Chivas, two of the league’s most popular and most hated teams, are at the top of the standings.
Cruz Azul is also near the top, while fourth-place Atlas has a real chance to advance deep into the Liguilla. Toluca has cooled off toward the end of the season.
Tijuana, where Gilberto Mora plays, is also in the mix. Mora has been quiet and has not played much, but perhaps the club is saving him for the Liguilla and a fairy-tale farewell from Liga MX. León and Santos complete the top eight.
Santos has turned its season around under its 26-year-old president, the son of the company’s owner. After struggling for 18 months and finishing at the bottom of the tournament, Santos put together a seven-game unbeaten streak. The team has been the hottest in Liga MX over the past six weeks, earning a place in the Liguilla.
Monterrey and Pumas sit just below the top eight, leaving uncertainty over whether Pumas will make the Liguilla.
