Messi’s MLS Focus Sets Up a Potential Miami-Nashville Playoff Showdown
Messi is now retired from the Argentinian national team and focused solely on his MLS career, where he continues to shatter records in the United States. He leads the league with 23 goals and 14 assists.
Miami clinched a playoff spot with a 2-0 win over New York City Football Club on October 14. DePaul scored following a Messi assist, while Berte Mare added the second goal. As the reigning MLS Cup champions, Miami could become even stronger with Messi focused entirely on the league rather than the national team or World Cup.
Nashville could present a major obstacle. The team has been better than Miami, LAFC, Vancouver and returning contenders such as Chicago and San Jose. A playoff battle between Miami and Nashville, particularly with a place in the conference final at stake, would be one of the most anticipated matchups.
Nashville may have a slight edge, but it remains difficult to bet against Miami. USD, Torres and DePaul are producing goals in the attack, but Miami’s defense remains the key concern after conceding 50 goals so far.
Gonzalez, the new coach who arrived on September 16, appears to have fixed the attack. The playoffs will reveal whether the defense can hold up against the top teams in MLS.
Miami faces a difficult balance with Messi. The team can maximize its attack by surrounding him with players who complement his ability, but it must also address the defensive end. Casemiro has put in significant effort and improves the midfield’s density and compactness without the ball, but he is naturally offensive despite being a holding midfielder. He is not a world-class center back who can command the area and give Miami assurance at the back. That is the type of player the team still needs.
Beating Nashville for the top seed would give Miami home-field advantage, which could be crucial. However, Miami may attract large crowds away from home as well because so many people want to watch Messi.
The Playoff Picture
In the East Coast standings, Nashville and Miami have clinched playoff spots. New England and Chicago sit in third and fourth place after spending several seasons outside the picture. Chicago’s turnaround has been especially impressive, with Harter taking over as sporting director and coach and seeing the formula pay off.
Charlotte’s position is not surprising, while Philadelphia has gradually recovered from a terrible start and moved into playoff contention. Orlando, the New York Red Bulls and Cincinnati complete the nine playoff spots, with New York City Football Club just outside the top bracket.
DC United’s struggles are not surprising. Columbus has endured a terrible season since Rossi and several other stars left. Atlanta continues to spend money without seeing a return on its investment, while Montreal is struggling but still has a project in place.
