Anticipating the 2026 World Cup in Mexico City

Mexico City, ranking as the fifth-largest metropolitan area globally by population, is set to host the World Cup for a record third time. With over 20 million residents, many of whom are football enthusiasts, the excitement is palpable as the Estadio Azteca gears up to kick off the tournament on June 11, 2026.

This venue holds a prestigious place in football history, having previously welcomed significant events such as Pele’s triumphant farewell in 1970 and Maradona's memorable performances in 1986. The forthcoming World Cup will mark another historic moment, as the Estadio Azteca will host the opening game for the third time following earlier occasions in 1970 and 1986, showcasing its status not just as a stadium, but as a temple of football.

Renamed as Mexico City Stadium for the duration of the 2026 World Cup, the Estadio Azteca will host five key matches: three during the group stage, one in the round of 32, and another in the round of 16, promising an exciting lineup for fans worldwide. Notably, significant renovations are enhancing the stadium. These upgrades include a revamped facade, modern locker rooms, and the installation of high-resolution LED screens. Efforts are also being made to increase the stadium's capacity from 83,000 to 90,000 by redeveloping one of its stands.

With more than 2 billion pesos invested in refurbishments, the stadium is poised to support world-class football and entertainment for the next 40 to 50 years. This sustained modernization not only respects the architectural heritage and storied history of the Estadio Azteca but also aims to significantly enhance the spectator experience.

As preparations for the World Cup continue, fans and players alike can expect another spectacular series of matches in a city that has consistently delivered exceptional football celebrations.
