NWSL Playoff Race Heats Up in the Home Stretch
As the NWSL season enters its closing stretch, every game matters. Gotham and San Diego have already clinched playoff spots, with reigning champion Gotham securing the advantage of playing at home. The team’s strong connection with the New York community could provide important support during the playoffs.
Washington Spirit, Utah Royals and Kansas City remain in the postseason picture, while Angel City continues to hold a playoff position week after week. Angel City has yet to reach the playoffs in its history, but the club could change that this season.
There was uncertainty after Alyssa Thompson left for Chelsea, but Angel City has continued to perform well behind players such as her younger sister, Giselle Thompson. The team is unbeaten in seven games and recently earned a 1-1 draw against Gotham through Suarez’s equalizer in the 91st minute.
Portland Thorns and North Carolina Courage are also in contention. Courage player Ashley Sanchez delivered an impressive performance with the U.S. women’s national team over the weekend.
Chicago Stars, Racing Louisville and Bay FC are among the teams that were not expected to become leading contenders this season. As a newer franchise, however, Bay FC was expected to bring some momentum.
Boston Legacy has improved after beginning the season with several red cards. The team has found its footing and has been able to keep 11 players on the field for the full 90 minutes. Denver Summit also started the season well and remains close to playoff contention.
Orlando Pride struggled at the beginning of the season but may only need the final five or six games to move into the playoff zone. Angel City remains part of that tight race, especially with Seattle only three points away.
Gotham may be the favorite, but its late dropped points against Angel City showed how competitive the closing phase could be. Washington, led by Trinity Rodman, is also in strong form as the playoff race intensifies.
