Riyad Mahrez: From League D to Football Icon

Riyad Mahrez’s meteoric rise began in January 2014 when he was just 23, playing in France's lower leagues. By the end of that year, he had represented Algeria at the World Cup and helped Leicester City secure a spot in the English Premier League. His career trajectory took an even more dramatic rise as he led Leicester to an improbable Premier League title in 2016 and was named the best footballer in England by his peers. That year, he also received recognition as the best player in Africa.

In his acceptance speech for one of these accolades, Mahrez expressed his gratitude towards his teammates, managers, the president of the Federation, and his family. He dedicated his successes to his supporters in Algeria and across Africa, reflecting his deep connection to his roots and fans.

Mahrez's national reputation was initially controversial due to criticism from local media and allegations surrounding his inclusion in the World Cup squad. However, he firmly established himself in the hearts of his countrymen by captaining Algeria to their second Africa Cup of Nations title in 2019, scoring crucial goals along the way.

After his spell at Leicester City, Mahrez joined Manchester City, adding four more Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League trophy to his name during one of the club’s most successful periods. Now playing in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ahli, Mahrez continues to showcase his skill and passion for football, leading his team to their first AFC Champions League title. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new league, his motivation remains high as he prepares for potentially his final World Cup in 2026.
