USWNT Rallies Against Spain as Women’s Football Takes Center Stage

The U.S. women’s national team faced Spain twice over the weekend, losing the first match before producing an exciting comeback in the second. After falling behind 2-0 to the reigning World Cup champions, the United States shifted the momentum and scored twice.

Spain played beautifully, repeatedly breaking through the U.S. defensive line and moving the ball around the American defense. However, the United States responded with greater determination as the match progressed.

Ashley Sanchez scored the first U.S. goal and delivered an incredible performance. The North Carolina Courage player, who leads the NWSL in scoring, stood out as the player of the match because of her determination and refusal to give up.

The Thompson sisters also played well, with Alyssa Thompson showing clear improvement at Chelsea. Their performances added to the excitement surrounding the next Women’s World Cup.

Spain and the United States are expected to attract plenty of attention when the tournament heads to Brazil next summer. As the host nation and with Marta’s farewell adding special motivation, Brazil will also carry a unique aura into the competition.

Spain has closed the gap the United States held over the rest of women’s football for decades. The U.S. can no longer enter every competition expecting to win simply because it is wearing the Stars and Stripes.

Elsewhere, Brazil and Argentina played to a 2-2 draw, while Mexico defeated Jamaica 3-1. Mexico continues to rise behind strong players emerging from Liga MX Femenil.

Germany also faced Japan, a consistently strong force in women’s football. Japan should no longer be considered a dark horse after repeatedly proving its quality.

The Women’s World Cup promises competitive matches, great goals and plenty to watch for fans of the game.
